Vice President rallies Santorum supporters in New York City

WASHINGTON – In a surprising turn of events today, Vice President Joe Biden announced that he is backing Republican candidate Rick Santorum in the 2012 presidential race. The Vice President said he will continue to serve his country as second in command while he campaigns for Santorum on weekends. He assured his democratic base that he has no intention of abandoning President Obama.

“My allegiance is to my President,” Biden told a small group of supporters at a DC convalescent home. “I just feel in my heart of hearts that Rick Santorum’s priorities fall more in line with what the majority of the American people hunger for in their next president. Like myself, Rick is a practicing Catholic. We both hold faith as our most cherished of beliefs alongside severe restrictions on the use and availability of contraception and keeping the gays away from children and animals.”

During his appearance earlier today on the Maury Povich show President Obama spoke briefly about Biden’s endorsement of Santorum.

“The Vice President came to me with his decision to campaign for Rick Santorum and we had a long talk. By the time we wrapped it up I was eager to jump on the SANTORUM FOR PRESIDENT train myself!” the President laughed. “But all joking aside, if it turns out Rick is the Republican nominee my confidence will be shattered. Every night I pray for Santorum … uh, I mean Romney to win the Republican nomination. Rick Santorum is a force to be reckoned with and I honestly don’t know if anyone could defeat him. He’s a visionary with his finger on the pulse of the important issues of the day. Because of Rick I plan to focus a larger percentage of my time on contraception; who uses it, how they use it, how often they use it and how it’s paid for. I also think Rick’s onto something with his preoccupation with the gays.”13306282761 Joe+Biden+Rick+Santorum+Meet+Press+1YW8jZMq1tMl1 Vice President Biden Endorses Rick Santorum

Maury Povich asked the President if he had plans to withdraw from the race if Santorum wins the Republican nomination.

“At this time we’re crossing our fingers and praying for a Santorum, uh, I mean a Romney nomination.”

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a statement earlier today about Biden’s decision.

“I can understand the Vice President’s enthusiasm about Rick Santorum. Although I am fully committed to President Obama’s 2012 re-election, if Rick Santorum were the Republican nominee I don’t harbor any illusions that we’d have a chance in hell of winning a second term. Senator Santorum isn’t so much a Republican candidate as much as he’s the people’s candidate. That’s why we’re seeing so many Democrats showing up at Republican primarys pulling the lever for Rick. And like so many others in this administration, my nightly prayers are impassioned pleas to our creator for a Santorum, I mean a Romney nomination.”

When a reporter asked Bill Clinton his thoughts on a Rick Santorum nomination he laughed.

“Whew! I sure wouldn’t want to be in President Obama’s shoes. That would be a daunting position. If that happens I wouldn’t be surprised if President Obama dropped out of the race altogether.”

“Rick Santorum is a born leader. His preoccupation with contraception resonates with the American people. Barack and I are fully aware if Romney, uh, I mean if Rick gets the Republican nomination, we’re toast. But we’re grateful for an incredible four years in the White House and we’ll look forward to serving President Santorum any way we can. ”
